Then press a key on the keyboard hooked to the KVM switch and your MacBook Pro should wake up, with everything showing on the external monitor. The other option is to keep the MacBook Pro closed (on, but asleep) when you switch over to it through the KVM switch. The key has two little rectangles on it-this key toggles between display mirroring and extended display. To do that, get everything set up like you're seeing it currently (with the external monitor showing the single untitled folder) and then press the F7 key at the top of your MacBook Pro's built in keyboard. One, you can make it so it's in display mirroring mode, so the same thing is displayed on both the internal MacBook Pro display and the external 21" display. Then if you look on the other monitor, the cursor will probably be on it now.Īnyway, I just thought I'd explain what's going on that you're seeing now, well I think that's what you're seeing! 🙂 As for the solution, there are basically two things you can do:
3 of the sides will act normal, but on one side the cursor will probably appear to keep going past it and disappear. It's kind of hard to explain but try moving the cursor to every side of the monitor it's currently on.

It sounds like your MacBook Pro is going into "extended display" mode which means that the external 21" PC monitor is acting as an extension to the MacBook Pro's display - you can move the cursor from one monitor to the other by going past the edge of the display (then the cursor seamlessly goes to the other monitor). When they're connected, does one ordinarily see the same display on both the laptop and the larger monitor, or is there some way to channel the display through the larger monitor only? Incidentally, how are MacBook Pros normally connected to larger PC monitors? My computer came with a VGA adapter so it could be connected to such a monitor.

Can anyone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it? I just have to convince my laptop to ignore its built in monitor and display everything on my PC monitor, not just one empty folder. So my KVM switch is obviously almost working. (I learned how to do the hot key trick so I can toggle by hitting the CTRL key twice.) Also, my MacBook told me it didn't recognize my keyboard, so I replaced it with a Mac-compatible keyboard. The results are pretty much the same, except that now when I toggle to Apple mode, my mouse moves the cursor on the laptop's built in monitor, not on the larger PC monitor. Next, I reversed the wires, plugging the PC into the KVM node that had formerly connected to my MacBook Pro and vice versa. In other words, I can move the cursor on my larger PC monitor with either the mouse or the trackpad. The trackpad that's built into my laptop also works on my PC monitor.
I can't tell if the keyboard works or not.
Curiously, it displays one folder, titled "untitled folder 3." My mouse works, though there's nothing for it to manipulate, save one empty folder. However, it doesn't display anything I see on my laptop's built-in monitor - the menu bar, open programs, etc. In other words, I can use my mouse and keyboard with my PC just fine, and when I click the Scroll Lock key twice, the monitor shifts to Apple mode it has the same bluish background my laptop does. I plugged everything in as instructed, and it appears to be working at about 75%. I thought it would be nice to take advantage of my 21" PC monitor while I'm at home, so I purchased my first KVM switch. I'm still setting up my new MacBook Pro laptop. (Sorry, I had this posted in the wrong forum.)
